Discover Tasmania- Fishing around the island state

The fishing at this time of the year is sensational, everything is blooming and of course, we have the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race at the New Year.

Big fish are starting to move around the state, and with water temperatures on the increase offshore, we are starting to see species such as Albacore tuna, Yellowfin tuna and Yellowtail Kingfish turn up.

As I mentioned, sea surface temps are on the rise and last week off Eddystone Point in the state’s North East, we saw an upwelling of warmer water meeting the cool which bought in an influx of albacore tuna. This week, sea surface temps have dropped slightly and what this means is that anglers will probably go further offshore to get amongst game fish.

Mako shark are a popular target species now and right through to the autumn months.

Places like the Tamar Heads and Bicheno as well as Eaglehawk Neck in the state’s south are hot spots for anglers vying for this species.

Tuna fishing is just starting to heat up also with Albacore, Stripeys and Yellowfin making an appearance. Off St Helens, anglers using all manner of lures are starting to turn over some good fish and of course if you don’t have a boat, you can always charter one or use one of the many charter operators that operate from Tasmania’s coastline.
