Nine teams from across Canada vie for CYA Match Racing title

For the past several years, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, has been building its matching teams from the grass roots. David Jarvis, in part, has helped to build this group with his dedication and attention to detail. A great sailor in his own right, Peter is in charge of maintaining the fleet of 6 Sonars and 2 Elliots, as well as organizing the crew to run these match racing events. Equally dedicated is Andrew Alberti, a national umpire from RCYC, who recruits his umpires, even going so far as to get an Australian umpire, Trish Ford, in for this event!
Teams came from all over Canada. From the RCYC were Sharron Ferris, Peter Wickwire, Jen Provan, and Hamish Matthew. Peter Hall came in from the the Royal St. Lawrence YC, Michael Clements from the Royal Vancouver YC, Evan Petley Jones from Royal Nova Scotia YS, Ann Marie Shewfelt from National YC, and Steve Wells from Northern YC.
Racing took place in the Toronto Harbour September 23-25th.
Friday was a gruesome day with rain coming down in buckets - so hard that the water turned to foam. Even Chief Umpire, David Pelling, complained of being cold and uncomfortable. Despite this, PRO Chris Cook and his crew, managed to run 9 flights (27 races).
Saturday was sunny and warm but with very light winds under 5 knots. The first round robin was completed with the top 6 skippers (Ferris, Clements, Matthew, Wickwire, Provan, and Hall) moving into an elimination for the semi-finals.
Racing continues on Sunday with the Finals, semi- Finals, and Consolation rounds.
