Commissioning of Kevlacat rescue vessel for Marine Rescue Port Kembla

A new Kevlacat catamaran rescue vessel for Marine Rescue Port Kembla will be commissioned at 12.00 noon on Saturday 9 July 2011 at Port Kembla Port Corporation.

The new vessel, Marine Rescue PK 20 (8m survey length, 9m LOA) is the first of several Kevlacat rescue vessels to be ordered for deployment by Marine Rescue NSW units.

Marine Rescue NSW has embarked on a demanding replacement program for an ageing fleet of more than 70 craft to provide the NSW recreational boating community with a fleet of modern, fast response rescue vessels and ensure that Marine Rescue NSW volunteers have the right equipment for rescue work.

PK 20 is equipped with state-of-the-art Raymarine GPS, radar and FLIR night vision, Icom marine radio electronics, Class A Furuno AIS (Automatic Identification System) and advanced first aid equipment including cardiac defibrillator and oxygen therapy.

PK 20 will be stationed at Port Kembla on the NSW Illawarra Coast as part of a strategically located safety net of vessels covering the NSW coastline.

Guests attending the commissioning ceremony will include:
• Mr. Gareth Ward MP (Kiama) representing the Minister for Police & Emergency Services;
• Mr. James Glissan QC, Chairman of the Board, Marine Rescue NSW;
• Mr. Stacey Tannos ESM, Commissioner, Marine Rescue NSW;
• Mr. Peter Purnell Unit Commander, Marine Rescue Port Kembla;
• Members of Port Kembla Unit and representatives from other Marine Rescue units.

The commissioning ceremony will take place on Saturday 9 July at Port Kembla NSW in the Training Room of Port Kembla Port Corporation, Foreshore Rd, Port Kembla.
