Subway USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and Independence Day Regatta victory has gone to Southern YC athlete Ben Herman of New Orleans who sailed a perfect regatta.

He won the only two Laser races— out of seven scheduled; and for his excellent sailing, he won the third annual Subway Celebrate Sailing Trophy as the top sailor in the Junior Olympic Festival.

Joining Herman in the winner's circle for the other fleets and divisions were the Flying Scot team of Seth Cooke, Darwin Pritchard and Hank Moran from Ft. Walton Beach FL, Michael Rice and Caroline Johnson in the 420 Class from Pensacola FL, Beckett Hamilton of Panama City FL in Opti Green, Gorham Partington of Pensacola FL in Opti White, Mitch Powell from Fairhope AL in Opti Red, and Boyd Housey from Pass Christian MS in Opti Blue. Boyd Housey also won first place overall in the Opti Fleet.

Forty-seven young Gulf Coast sailors competed on Pensacola Bay this weekend at the 10th annual SUBWAY Sailing Clinic and the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and Independence Day Regatta. The festivities started on Friday July 1st with high-powered coaching clinics and conclude with the prize giving ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

Seven races were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday on courses in Pensacola Bay, but thunderstorms each day held racing to just one a day.

BP Oil joined in to support the event this year in sponsoring the safety boats on the course. In Sunday’s squall, this proved to be particularly helpful as gusty winds scattered the youth sailors all over the bay and the safety boats went to the rescue of several capsized sailors.

The Subway Junior Sailing Clinic, and the 10th annual Independence Day Regatta and the US Sailing Junior Olympic Sailing Festival on the Gulf Coast are presented again for the third year by local SW Alabama and NW Florida Subway restaurants. Pensacola Yacht Club in Pensacola, Florida hosts the annual festival and regatta from the clubhouse located at the mouth of Bayou Chico on Cypress Street, Pensacola.
