New outboard engine range for Sydney International Boat Show

Outboard engines are out to snare the headlines at the forthcoming Sydney International Boat Show (July 28-August 1) with two new names shooting for a share of the market.

As has previously been announced, Telwater, parent company of such well-known boating names as Quintrex, Stacer and Savage, have unveiled the Chinese-made Vortex outboard that will be marketed as a component in the company’s BMT (boat, motor trailer) packages.

Now, another new range of outboard engines is scheduled for a show debut in the form of Titan, a comprehensive range of two-stroke engines also produced in China, but manufactured in the facility originally owned by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) producing Johnson and Evinrude engines.

A newly-formed, Newcastle-based company, Outboard Motors Australia Pty Ltd has been appointed the exclusive distributor for the Titan range, from 3hp to 65hp.

The company also offers commercial grade ‘work engines’ in 10hp, 18hp and 40hp.

A four-stroke line-up will be introduced next year.

Peter Osborn, director of sales and marketing for the new company, said his aim was to 'create the opportunity' for dealers to sell an outboard engine with quality and competitive pricing.

'We will seek motivated dealers who can see this is an opportunity to achieve greater margins while still giving value to their customers,' he said.

Located west of Shanghai, the factory built by the marine division of BRP, was shut down allegedly due to the global financial crisis almost as soon as it was opened.

It is believed business interests in the Netherlands and Argentina acquired the facility.

According to Peter Osborn, the facility boasts 'world class' machine tools, high pressure die casting equipment, painting and assembly lines.

Other components, including critical engine rotating and reciprocating elements such as pistons, piston rings, connecting rods and crank shafts are produced by specialist manufacturers that are also responsible for manufacturing these components for established outboard brands.

The product has undergone extensive testing with initial product selling throughout South America over the last two-years.

Mr Osborn said additional, rigorous testing has been done in Australia in salt and fresh water to determine the suitability of the Titan range in Australian conditions.

The 2011 Titan range is described as being based on 'simple, but robust two-stroke powerheads.'

Short and long shaft configuration is available as is remote control and power trim.

'Although the initial range is with mature technology in reed valve carburetion, it also features current industry standard safety features such as lanyard emergency stop and in-gear starting protection,' Mr Osborn added.

The commercial grade engines feature heavy-duty cooling system components and optimised fuel delivery for professional applications.
