Green Comm Challenge for the 2013 America’s Cup SW
European media are reporting that Spain’s Real Club Nautica of Valencia and Italy’s Green Comm Racing will jointly challenge for the 2013 America’s Cup, based on an invitation issued for the official announcement.
A leading Spanish -based website www.vsail.info http://www.vsail.info/2011/06/20/green-comm-to-officially-present-34th-americas-challenge-on-thursday-in-valencia/!carried_the_story last Monday, 20 June.
The Spanish-Italian challenge is the eighth challenger and will bring the total fleet to nine. They are the unannounced challenger alluded to at last week's Media Announcement in San Francisco where the other seven Challengers were confirmed.
The team has twice been involved as a potential Challenger for the America's Cup, but to date, has never made the start line.
Green Comm Racing tried to become a challenger in the litigious 33rd America's Cup when they lodged a very late challenge in multihulls that would have required Golden Gate Yacht Club to conduct a Challenger Selection Series. The winner of that series would have gone on to be the Challenger in the 33rd America's Cup.
During that Match the signage on the Team Shosholoza's team base in Valencia was overnight changed out for that of Green Comm, and the waterfront scuttelbutt had it that Green Comm would have been the Challenger of Record for the 34th America's Cup had Alinghi been successful over then BMW Oracle Racing.
Green Comm were earlier accepted as a valid Challenger, one of 18, when Societe Nautique de Geneve operated a multi challenger process for six months after their only win in the New York Supreme Court. That process stopped after Golden Gate Yacht Club prevailed on Appeal.
The Challenging Club will be the Real Club Nautica of Valencia. This will be a first for the America's Cup where a team from one country, Italy, will be Challenging through the yacht club of another country, in this case Spain.
The announcement will be formally made at the Valencia Yacht Club at 5.00pm local time.
