Sydney City Marine Winter Series - Hughie was back at work this week

by Brendan Rourke on 1 Jun 2011 The Sydney City Marine Winter Series 2011 continues n Sydney Harbour and Hughie was back at work this week. So finally there was a discussion on which headsail to use.

The Start Team tried to fool us by putting up Course 6 then quietly changing it to Course 8.

The pin end was looking good so most of the fleet headed for the pin. Then followed a good work to Lady Bay. With yachts taking both sides of the harbour. Left seemed to pay off.

During the final stages of the work to Lady Bay there would have been discussions on many yachts of what kite to use as it looked like a shy run to Grotto then a couple of gybes with a square run to Manly. It was interesting to see the different courses taken by the symmetrical kited yacht to the asso kited yachts. There were a few unintentional left and right turns by various yachts on the shy run. Maybe we have had so many light races they had forgotten how to sail in 15 knots?

As the yachts rounded the Bombora Mark it was a square run to Manly. It was interesting to see the angles sailed on this leg.

Around Manly it was a work back to Lady Bay with a starboard pass to Cannae required on the way. It was noted that one of the Division 2 yachts had not read the course properly. This led to a kite run back to Cannae to pass it on the right side.

Around Lady Bay and the straight run back to Cannae. A reasonably square run saw the symmetric kite yachts gain a good advantage.

This was followed by another work back to Lady Bay.

The final run was the triangle to Grotto Point with a gybe around the Bombora mark and down to Manly. The shy leg paid off well for the asso boats.

With only the long work back to Watsons Bay to go it was going to be a drag race to the line.

It was great to finally have a race with good consistent wind.
