45th Annual Governor’s Cup Teams announced by Balboa Yacht Club

Teams from four US yacht clubs have been notified that their applications have been accepted for Balboa Yacht Club’s 45th annual Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship which will take place July 19 to 24, 2011. The event features some of the best young match racing talent from all over the world.

King Harbor Yacht Club will be represented by Dillon Lancaster, Brandon Folkman and Scott Doyle. Representing Newport Harbor Yacht Club will be Chris Segerblom, Connor Bathen and Brooks Clark with Daniel Segerblom as alternate. Chris was the winning skipper of the 2010 Gov Cup, with Connor as part of his team. Brooks Clark also raced in the 2010 as part of a different team from NHYC. Representing San Diego Yacht Club will be Nevin Snow, Jake LaDow and Jake Reynolds, with Max Hutcheson as their alternate. That team also raced in the 2010 Gov Cup.

The racing will be held in the afternoons from Wednesday through Sunday in the ocean near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California. The round robin format of two boats racing against each other, with each team of three racing against every other team, provides spectators with continuous competition to watch. The talented racers will demonstrate a variety of tactics as they race around marks. It is especially exciting to watch when they round the weather mark, with colorful spinnakers flying. On the water International Umpires will provide instant response to protests and infractions. Many of the racers competed in Balboa Yacht Club’s Rose Cup, a youth match race clinic & regatta that was held in May. An automatic acceptance went to the winning team from San Diego Yacht Club that came out on top of that event and will return to take on all challengers.

After last year’s successful debut of a South American team, the Federacion Iberoamericana de Yachting will sponsor a new youth match race championship for that continent and the winner will be invited to the Governor’s Cup.

The winner of the Youth Match Racing Camp & Regatta to be held in Sheboygan, Wisconsin at the US Sailing Center from June 22-26 will receive an invitation as well. Dave Perry, the USSTAG Women’s Match Race coach, will coach that clinic, followed by a two day regatta.
