University Of New South Wales Sailing Club News

2011 Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta SW
In Late March, Katie Abbott and her crew of Tara McCall (UNSW High Performance Athlete), Angela Farrell and Sophie Lahey representing the Cruising Yacht Club Of Australia won the 2011 Harken Woman’s International Match Racing Regatta defeating New Zealander Danielle Bowater. In April Tara along with Hugh Tait won two NSW State Championships in the NS14 and MG14 classes.

Double Youth World Champion, Lisa adds more titles to her name

Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin (UNSW Ben Lexcen Scholar) won the Hobie 16 Queensland State Championships beating closest rivals Juliet & Peter Bates from Queensland.

Andrea Green’s Pretty Fly III reaches Newcastle in second place

Two times Rolex Sydney Hobart crew, Andrea Green (UNSW Elite Athlete) was part of Pretty Fly III that got second line honors at the prestigious 2011 Audi Sydney Offshore Newcastle Yacht Race. Stephen Alsnworth skippering Loki finished ahead of Colin Wood’s Pretty Fly III

UNSW’s Leung YUE Bo wins 2011 University Fleet Racing Regatta

UNSW had 3 sailors in the to 5 in the overall standings. Leung Yue Bo, former Hong Kong international windsurfer (mistral) won the 2011 Australian fleet racing regatta (Canberra). This is the first time a wind surfer has won the event. Ajay Rau (UNSW Elite Athlete and Indian international) had to be content with second place in the laser division; Nick Howe (Sydney University) sailed superbly to beat the well-seasoned campaigner. Ajay finished fourth Overall. Cameron Edwards faced stiff competition from Caitlin Davis (Monash University), but He came sailed well the last few races to claw back the radial division and finished fifth overall. Lewis Cheing Wan Yao finished third in the radial division and 12th overall.

UNSW Sailor at the ISAF World Cup

UNSW’s elite athlete Colin Cheng represented Singapore and finished 73rd at Hyeres (France), fourth leg of the International Sailing Federation World Cup

UNSW Annual Blues and Sports Awards 'Girl Power'

Dr Melanie Webb (Windsurfing) was inducted into the UNSW Hall of Fame. In 1983 Melanie was part of the winning team that won the World team sailing championships and was selected to represent Australia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic games where she placed fourth. In total she has won six world titles, 15 National Championships and nine state titles. Melanie obtained her medical degree from UNSW.

Lisa Darmanin Won the 2010 UNSW Female Athlete of the year after a string of medal winning performances which included winning her second youth World title in the Hobie 16 class.

Tara McCall was awarded the prestigious UNSW blues for good performances in university events that included a second place finish at the World University Match racing regatta in Greece. She also excelled in her studies and helped the UNSW sailing club develop during 2010.


CEO of Yachting Australia, Phil Jones and 2004 Olympian Kristen Kosmala were some of the big names from the Australian sailing community present and the award’s night.

UNSW fields team for the 2011 Australian Team racing Championships.

Maria Garcia Mateo, Elina Godwin, David Tho, Pierre Reny, Ajay Ra and Nicolas Thebaud will form the UNSW team racing at the 2011 Australian Team racing championships. It is being held at Woollahara sailing club (Sydney), from seventh-8th May.


UNSW Club Racing from Rosebay

On April 30th UNSW conducted the first fun club races of the year and had a total of 10 boats (23 people) on the water. 7 boats were from UNSW (5 RS fevas, 1 pacer and 1 laser) and 3 were from Woollahara sailing club (1 pacer, 1 laser and 1 moth). 4 fun races were held. Lisa brushed aside David in the last race to win the RS feva division easily in the end. All the skippers enjoyed pairing up with the beginners and taking part in the club races. UNSW students were delighted to sail and race against 2010 UNSW female athlete of the year Lisa Darmanin.

During March and April UNSW had 5 planned sailing sessions but could only conduct three due to heavy winds during planned events. In the future the club hopes to conduct more racing activities.

Audi Winter Series- crewing opportunities

There will be Yacht racing opportunities for students to take part in the 2011 Audi Winter series. Contact the UNSW sailing club if you are experienced and interested to crew for some of the races during the 2011 Audi winter series. Opportunities for beginners may also be available.
