The 48th Australian Cherub Championships held at Largs Bay Sailing Club in South Australia was won by Cherub veteran Trevor Fay and Nathan Chipchase on French Tickler from Belmont 16ft Skiff Sailing Club in New South Wales.
Fay has now reached legendary status amongst the Cherub fraternity by winning his fourth Australian Championship. Typically of South Australia half the races were held in very light conditions and the other half in over 20 knots. In each race Fay and Chipcase finished consistently in the top three to convincingly win the title.
Runners up were also local South Australian boys Neil How and Alex Bath on Monster who sailed well in all conditions. With its meticulous pink and white paint work, Monster also won the O’Mahoney Best Presented Cherub Award.
West Australians Ben Lawrie and Geoff Longwood from Perth Dinghy Sailing Club sailing Busted Football took third place, an exceptional effort considering a week before the regatta Ben’s boat was unfinished and he had only sailed with Geoff twice before.
As with all Cherub regattas the social calendar proved to be just as exciting as the racing and definitely not for the feint hearted.
The next Australian Cherub Championships will be held in Queensland at Yeppoon Sailing Club situated in a beautiful tropical area with good winds around that time of year.
