Australia's Ryan Palk leads the New Zealand National Laser Championships, after the first day of racing.

He opened with a sixth placing and followed up with a win in the second race of the day to hold a two point lead over Wellington's Josh Junior.

The points are very close in the NZ Open with just eight points covering the top nine competitors, with five of them being separated by just one point.

Series favorites, Michael Bullot and Andrew Murdoch are locked together on 15 points in 8th and 9th positions respectively.

In the Laser Radial class 2008 Olympic representative and runner up in the 2010 Womens 470 Worlds, Jo Aleh, is leading the fields with a handy margin after placing second in both races sailed in light-moderate sou'easterly breezes at North Shore's Torbay Sailing Club. NZL Sailing Team member, Sara Winther is lying sxth overall in the Open Radial fleet.

Over 180 sailors are contesting the regatta which continues until Tuesday.
