Sydney Harbour will have a new refuelling station in early 2011 with the Baileys fuel depot edging closer to opening its bowsers to commercial user and public users.
Located on one of Sydney Harbour’s historic working ports at White Bay 6, construction of the $10 million facility is nearly complete and will provide refuelling, greywater and sullage pumping to recreational users, as well as servicing commercial vessels working on the harbour.
Boat owners on the western side of the bridge (in the Balmain vicinity) have until now been forced to seek fuel from as far afield such as Rushcutters Bay.
Although the site will be a 24/7 operation, recreational boats will only be able to refuel between the hours of 5am and 10pm.
First proposed in 2004, the controversial Bailey’s fuel station has been opposed by some local residents for concerns the plan would create around-the-clock truck traffic and block public access to Balmain’s foreshore.
New South Wales Premier Kristina Kenealley approved the plan in June 2009 but with significant restrictions on truck access at night, and tight control of environmental impact and noise pollution.
Bailey’s Marine Director, Guy Bailey, said he was looking forward to opening this 'vital piece of infrastructure that will change the face of boating in Sydney Harbour'.
