The AA Team get top grades on day 1 of Tasar Nationals

by Nicole Douglass on 4 Jan 2011
Top mark rounding - hairy heading to distance marker - The 38th Australian Tasar Championships William Canty Sailcam.tv
38th Australian Tasar Championships day one was off to a blustery start yesterday, however, in the variable southerly conditions, The AA Team - Aaron Linton and Jamie Jochiem from Queensland again ruled the course at Woollahra Sailing Club taking out both races of the day.

In race 1, Aaron and Jamie led from mark one until the finish of the three lap windward-leeward course, sailed in 8 to 17 knots of southerly. The Olsens on Unleashed and Ridgways on Ridgididge, fought with Nev Wittey and J-C Strong on the first lap, with Harley Kruse and the Douglass’s getting into the mix by the second lap after a slow start.

The Olsens managed to hold out on the Ridgways who finished third, with Harley Kruse on Cookie Monster in fourth and Rob and Nic Douglass on Coollit closing in fifth.

In race 2, the start occurred just as a storm cloud was rolling through Sydney bringing wind speeds of up to 24 knots from the SSW. The AA Team took the lead from the Douglass’s at the very end of the first work, as the breeze died off and were never headed on the two-lap windward leeward course. This gave them boat of the day and the preliminary regatta lead on just two points.

The Douglass’s remained in second place for the remaining legs. A blinder on the second work put Martin Linsley and Bruce Eddes of the Australian Defence Force on Seasparrow into third with the Ridgways finishing in fourth and Craig McPhee and Gill Berry on Roll Your Own in fifth to round out the top five.

Racing continues today commencing from 1pm today. A great sight with the racing coming up into Rose Bay with the prevailing southerly breezes for the next few days.

Thanks to the major regatta sponsors, Ronstan and Bethwaite Design, as well as the day sponsor for day 1 at this regatta, Deanna Harken of Flow Energetics, who is the on-site massage therapist for the regatta.
