Key West World Championships - Super Boat host the 30th Annual Worlds

The 30th annual World Championships come to Key West www.superboat.com
Key West World Championships - The world’s fastest and most competitive boats head to Key West Florida, this second week of November for the 30th Annual Key West World Championships. It has been said… to be the best, you have win in Key West. For powerboat teams racing in the U.S. and all around the world, that has become the accepted norm. Super Boat International, based in Key West, is very excited about this year’s event and expects a great turnout for the 30th annual celebration event.

'This championship is going to be very exciting based on the number of boats coming, the variety of competitors and the fact we are celebrating 30 years of offshore world championships here in Key West,' comments founder of Super Boat International, John Carbonell. 'We already have 50 pre-registered national and international teams and, as usual, many teams register when they arrive, so we are planning on a great boat count. That really is a testament to why Key West is where the true world championships are held. The economy is still very, very tough on everyone, but it goes to show how important this event is for teams, the City of Key West and, most importantly, all the fans who come to watch.' Even with a difficult economy, Super Boat expects record crowds and, for this weeklong tradition, to be the largest and most successful event of the year for Key West.

Teams competed this past October in Clearwater Beach to finish out the season for the national points series. Super Boat hosts 8 spectacular events throughout the US during the year and teams accumulate points to earn the right to be crowned National Champion. Teams that earned their national title accomplishments in Clearwater get the chance to be recognized in Key West during the National Awards presentation. Super Boat is planning a spectacular concert after the presentation with Miami’s hottest cover band, The Bushman, Saturday November 13th in Truman Annex.

Multi-time Key West World Champion, Peter Meyer, is ready for the keys. ' I love Key West… it feels like coming home. This is the home of the offshore World Championships and it’s the best place to watch the races if you’re a fan. The boats come right by the outer mole and its up-close action all the way.' Meyer, owner of Instigator Motorsports, hopes to earn his eighth world title this November.

Many teams will be competing for the coveted title of World Champion. Boats vary in length and horsepower. While some teams may get a little more attention than others, all the teams work hard in their respective classes to make certain their boats are properly set up and ready for the week of competition. The big boats may reach incredible speeds and fly right over the wave crests, but its often the teams that run a slightly shorter hull length, that feel the tops and bottoms of every wave and know exactly how rough it really is.

Boats start arriving Friday (6th) and will stage in Race Village (Truman Annex) where fans can see their favorite teams up close. Events begin on Sunday afternoon (7th) at 4:00 pm, where teams leave Truman Annex, parade down Duvall Street and then return back to the dry pits. Fans can watch scheduled testing off the Outer Mole Tuesday (9th), Thursday (11th) and Saturday (13th) from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Races will be held Wednesday (10th), Friday (12th) and the final event Sunday (14th). Races are scheduled for 10:00 am, 12:30pm and 2:00 pm, so be early, stay late and enjoy the week of activities. Bleachers for fans will be set up at the Outer Mole in the Truman Annex at the end of Southard Street. Finally, do not forget, Friday night (6th) from 6:00pm to 10:00 pm, boats will park on Duval Street for the Annual Super Boat Street Party.

Super Boat races will be streamed live this year on Superboat.com. Live coverage will begin just prior to all three-race start times. Race times are 10:00 am, 12:30pm and 2:00pm Wednesday 10th, Friday 12th and the final race Sunday 14th. Listen to the voice of Super Boat, Stan Lane, and catch almost 5 hours each day of Super Boat action from Key West, Florida.

Pick up a copy of this year’s 30th Annual Key West World Championship Program in the dry pits and catch some of the great stories of days past and see what excitement happened this last season. Get your copy early; limited quantities are available.
