The 31m solar powered, carbon fibre wavepiercer catamaran 'Turanor Planet Solar', designed by New Zealand's Auckland-based LOMOcean Design, departed Monaco this Monday on the first leg of a world tour intended to highlight sustainable energy.
When the voyage is complete, Turanor Planet Solar is expected to be the first vehicle ever to circumnavigate the globe using electricity derived solely from photovoltaic cells, driving electric motors and carbon fibre propellers.
LOMOcean Design - also the designers of Earthrace/Ady Gil - was responsible for the naval architecture, styling, arrangement drawings and structural engineering of Turanor Planet Solar. The Swiss-flagged, German funded project was constructed by Kiel's Knierim Yachtbau, utilizing European solar, battery, electrical and propulsion technology and expertise.
