Zhik RS Eurocup 2010 grand finals took place today at Fraglia Vela Riva. This biennial event started on Monday with over 400 sailors, mostly British, at Riva del Garda and concluded in great style today, Friday.

After the cancellation of races yesterday due to rain and lack of wind, three legs were completed today bringing to a total of nine races (ten races maximum). At nine o’ clock this morning boats, buoy setters and the Race Committee were ready to start the first race of the day with winds from the north at 14 knots and calm waters. Two legs were completed, the second of which had a shorter course due to a drop in the wind. The classic change of wind direction from north to south was a little sudden and the courses were duly prepared for the ninth and final race at 13.00.

The 'Ora' wind of 20 to 24 knots provided a splendid conclusion to this regatta which combined sport, sailing and tourism giving an excellent boost to the local economy. The final party will be held this evening with samplings of specialties from Trentino but everyone is already in good spirits with the success of this great week of sailing.

As far as the results are concerned the top positions were quite decisive, leaving tighter competitions in the positions further behind. This was a regatta that included everyone, from the very young to the more mature adult and with many mixed crews all with one objective in mind, to enjoy themselves aboard their RS class of choice.

Fraglia Vela Riva once again pulled out all the stops to guarantee the maximum races possible and despite the unstable weather on Trentino Garda during this past week, were able to have a high number of races completed.

A great sense of satisfaction for all the organizational staff, operational and managerial, who continue to receive consensus from more and more sailing classes that, they too, would like to hold their major championship at Riva del Garda and at Fraglia Vela Riva in particular.

A summary of the RS single class results:

RS 200 (76 boats/152 sailors). Dominating throughout this event were Roger Gilbert and Jane Willam who achieved six firsts and a second and had the luxury of being able to sit out the last two races having their first place already in the bag. Ten points behind, in second place, (despite two dnc in the last two races), were David and Jane Hivey. Ten points behind them with two false starts, were James Boyce and Sam Tozer third.

RS 400 (29 boats/58 sailors). With five wins and two second partials James Downer and John Price were able to sit out the last two races having already guaranteed themselves first place and leaving the others to battle it out. Even with a false start in the second race today, Sims-George were able to hold on to second place five points ahead of Bone-Martin. King-Brown were just behind with a win in today’s last race.

RS 600 (7 boats). This fleet was the smallest with only seven boats. Steve Birbeck was first with a clean win with Andy Heissig and Giles Chipperfield second and third respectively.

RS 700 (20 boats). Alex Newton-Southon took first place with six partial firsts, two thirds and a seventeenth. Second was John Heissig five points behind. Mark Pollington was third.

RS 800 (52 boats/104 sailors). With a faster and more impressive skiff, the RS 800 resembles the 49er in characteristics and performance. The crew of McGrane-Allen dominated with a fifteen point lead over Adam Broughton-Steve Wilson. Deal-Page were third ten points behind. They had started well in the first two races (1-2) but after became more inconsistent.
