Silver
Medal for 49er
Peter
Burling and Blair Tuke won the silver medal at 2010 Delta Lloyd Regatta in the Netherlands. Also recording a
top ten result was Jon-Paul Tobin in the Men’s RS:X.
The regatta, which is
the fifth in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Series, concluded on May
31st.
The kiwis in the 49er went into the medal race in third position
behind Delle Karth of Austria and Australia’s Outteridge. They placed second in
the race which saw them move up to claim the silver medal.
“The regatta
had a huge range of conditions from drifters to puffs over 20 knots. It was nice
to find our speed pretty good over the whole range and to improve our racing
results every day through the regatta,” report team Burling and Tuke.
“It’s always fun to have a successful trip to Europe and return with
some metalware. We’ve done this before in other classes but this is the first
time in our 49er campaign so far.”
This is the best result to date for
the young kiwis who have been in the 49er together for only 18 months. Burling
and Tuke won silver at Sail Melbourne in December last year, and placed eighth
at Miami Olympic Classes Regatta in January this year.
Jon-Paul Tobin finished tenth
in the 100 strong Men’s RS:X fleet despite suffering from a back injury on the
penultimate day of the series. The incident meant Tobin scored a DNF for race
seven.
“The DNF was due to somehow popping out up my upper back lower
neck in race six,” explains Tobin. “The Dutch physio helped to work the problem
out a little bit that night and following morning.”
Tobin was able to go
on and continue racing and compete in the medal race, in which he placed eighth.
He finished the series in tenth overall.
The next Olympic classes
regatta in the ISAF Sailing World Cup is Kiel Week in Germany which runs from
18th to 23rd June.

O’Canada
first to Fiji for President’s Trophy
The
2010 ANZ Auckland to Denerau Ocean Race challenged the fleet with a wide range
of conditions.
Check below for SKY TV screening times of SilverFox TV's
documentary on the race.
Fierce northerly headwinds hit the fleet on day
two, as predicted by forecasters in the lead up to the race. Competitors report
winds in the 30 to 50 knot range which then subsided as the system passed.
The bulk of the fleet then spent a few days drifting in very light
fickle winds before transitioning into the trades which were a little slow to
appear. Open 60 O Canada built an early lead on the fleet and continued
to stretch out going on to arrive in Denerau Friday 9:41am, after an elapsed
time of 139 hours and 41 minutes. Skippered by Olympic Finn sailor Dan Slater O
Canada took line honours convincingly and were presented with the President’s
Trophy as first boat to finish.
Caught in the drift-off Wired
[Bakewell-White 52] followed crossing the line second just over 30 hours behind
O Canada. Ran Tan II [Elliott 50] was third three hours behind Wired.
Striking the mid race light patch meant that the corrected time winners
were essentially determined in the second half of the race.
On board
Bennetaeu First 50, Bird on the Wing, Brent Marshall and crew enjoyed Hors
D’oeuvres and full meals. In spite of the offshore luxuries, Bird on the Wing,
now a race regular, this year things went their way and the boat claimed the
coveted IRC win by a mere eight minute margin from brand new boat General Lee
[Bakewell-White 36].
When asked about race highlights, Brent Marshall,
Bird on the Wing skipper quotes, “Being at sea with a brilliant group of friends
and sharing in the joy of ocean racing.”
“The windy second night saw us
as one of the boats which advanced best up the course, and the three or four
extended kite rides we had at different stages in 20-25kts.”
Ross 40,
REVs sailed a strong race pushing to the west early on and persevering with that
track despite the wind hole. They were seventh in to Fiji and returned solid
results across the divisions – first on ORC Club, second on PHRF, and third
under IRC.

New
Zealand’s Georgia set to compete in Australia
New
Zealand TP52 race yacht Georgia will be in Queensland soon for two of Australia’s
major keelboat regattas. First up is Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Regatta
followed closely by Audi Hamilton Island Race Week. Farmer, who sails
out of Auckland, has already claimed the New Zealand IRC championship with the
yacht, which like its predecessors is named Georgia. Now he hopes it will take
him to the top of the podium in IRC Grand Prix Division One at Audi Hamilton
Island Race Week. Back for his fifth Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, his best
place to date has been third overall in 2003.
The latest Georgia’s
pedigree says it has every chance of being highly competitive against the slick
Australian campaigns. Designed by Botin & Careek and built by Cookson’s in
New Zealand, it is from the same mould that produced the current Audi Med Cup
champion, Emirates Team New Zealand.
About Audi Hamilton
Island Regatta Georgia is one of more than 75 yachts already
entered for the regatta, which will be staged from August 20 to 28. Organisers
remain confident that this year’s event will again see around 200 yachts
competing, a number that will once again confirm Audi Hamilton Island Race Week
as Australia’s premier keelboat regatta. The entry list represents the full
spectrum of keelboat racing, from the smallest non-spinnaker cruising yachts
through to supermaxi thoroughbreds, and for the first time, superyachts up to 60
metres in length.
About Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach
Regatta This year marks the 21st running of the Annual Meridien
Airlie Beach Race Week in the Whitsundays to be staged from August 12 – 19. As
the event continues to go from strength to strength organisers are expecting up
to 140 boats. This year’s event will also feature multihull racing.
Velux
5 Oceans coming to Wellington
The ultimate solo yachting challenge – the VELUX 5 Oceans - will
visit Wellington, New Zealand.
The route for the 2010-11 VELUX 5 OCEANS,
the eighth edition of the classic solo yacht race since it first began in 1982,
will begin in La Rochelle in France on October 17 and features five ocean
sprints. After heading from La Rochelle to Cape Town, the race will then take to
Wellington in New Zealand, Salvador in Brazil and Charleston in the US before
returning back across the Atlantic to France.
Ocean Sprint 2 to
Wellington sees the race returning to New Zealand for the third time, having
previously visited Tauranga and Auckland, in 2002 and 1998 respectively. New
Zealand's Capital City will host the race for the first time and will be the
ideal venue for the competitors to recover from the long leg from Cape Town
before preparing for the treacherous Southern Ocean Sprint around Cape Horn to
Brazil.
