Flying 15 Inland Championships - Bewl Valley sailing club near Lamberhurst, Kent - June 5th and 6th 2010 report.

48 boats took part in the 2010 Inlands at Bewl Valley sailing club near Lamberhurst in Kent over the weekend of 5th and 6th June.

The start of racing was delayed on the Saturday for over two hours through lack of wind but race officer Richard Kingsnorth managed to get in two of a scheduled three races, once the regulation five knots of wind across the course was in evidence. Over a windward/leeward course in generally light conditions, both races on Saturday were won by Steve Goacher and Phil Evans from Royal Windermere.

The wind on Sunday was stronger and varying between west and south west. The Race Officer once again laid a windward/leeward course for the first race, then switched to a triangle/sausage for Race 4 by when the wind had strengthened to near planing conditions. Race 3 was won by Simon Kneller and Dave Lucas from Grafham Water and Race 4 by Henry Craven-Smith and Matt Alvarado from Hayling Island Sailing Club.

The overall champions for the weekend were Steve Goacher and Phil Evans from Royal Windermere. First Bewl Valley boat was won by Mike Blacklee and Bill Willock. First Silver Fleet boat, (sail number less than 3400), was sailed by Michael Green and Mark Green, visitors from St Lucia Yacht Club in the West Indies, who had never seen the borrowed boat they used for the event until arriving for the championship.

A social evening was arranged for the Saturday, to include an open-air hog roast, accompanied by a live jazz quartet, in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Bewl Water Reservoir, the largest inland water in the South East, in the heart of the Kent countryside.

The Defender is unlikely to soften the Rules and allow open season on its sailing team. Despite the shift of three times America's Cup winner, Peter Burling it is understood that there is unlikely to be any softening of the Nationality rule to enable Burling to get any closer to the action than a chase-boat in the 38th America's Cup.
