The first stage of the Grand Prix Ecole Naval - the French One Design Cruiser Championship - was contested just over a week ago with four French titles settled in the J80, Open 5.70, the Corsaire and the Longtze that attracted up to 170 teams. This weekend the naval college extends a welcome to the SB3 sportsboat class for its fourth Eurocup which has a strong Anglo-Saxon following.

The series will be sailed off Crozon-Morgat and almost 30 different crews representing six nationalities will challenge at this Laser SB3 Eurocup regatta which has built up a popular following among this flourishing class which races all over Europe.

Among those leading sailors who have raced in the Laser SB3 are four times Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie and Australia’s three times Laser world champion Glenn Bourke. Winners of the SB3 Eurocup regatta last year, Roger and David Hudson, return with their City of Cape Town.

Racing starts on Friday with a start sequence around 1300hrs, with racing each day until Monday when the winner should be known during the afternoon. On the Friday evening there is a reception for the crews at the Town Hall, Crozon. Saturday, Sunday and Monday the scheduled racing starts around 0900hrs and there are crew’s gatherings and parties each evening. The prize-giving should take place around 1430hrs on Monday 31st.

Alain Daoulas, Commisaire General of the Grand Prix Ecole Navale:
'The SB3 class is growing still and very competitive in Great Britain and so 30 boats are expected this weekend. To ensure this is a success we welcome the support of partners like Brittany Ferries, and the community and councils of Crozon Morgat. We are looking forward to seeing teams from six different nations get under starter’s orders. Of course the Grand Prix is now one of the important sporting events on the calendar in Finistere and for the Naval College as a nautical and engineering college it is an important event which uses the dynamics and challenge of sport to foster a greater international profile. And, closer to home, it reinforces our links locally with Crozon and the Brest communities.'

Jean-Marc Jourdain, Director of the Watersports Centre of Crozon Morgat:
'This regatta brings us the chance to work in close association again with the town of Crozon itself. We look after the on-the-water organization as well as the on-shore festivities, the opening cocktails night, the two crew’s evenings, and the prize-giving.'

'We work closely with the organizers of the Grand Prix Ecole Navale which manages the whole regatta running ‘upstream’. And for the last three years we, the Watersports Centre of Crozon Morgat, have worked well with the sports sectors to organize major events like this, and in the past have organized many ISAF classes’ championships. Our Watersports Centre of Crozon Morgat really believe in the fundamentals of one design racing and we hope that events such as this will attract more overseas visitors to come to see the Morgat, our centre and the great facilities here. We want to promote Morgat and all it has to offer.'

Katie Ashworth, secretary SB3 Class Association:
'This is always a really special weekend with a truly European feel to it that English crews really look forward to. And largely through the hard work and drive of Edward Russo it is great to report that the class is growing in France as it did significantly through the winter, and so this will be the first time we really see a strong home French entry. And, of course, a good time will be had by all!'

A look at The Ocean Cleanup and its the 30 Cities Program The cliche goes that one should avoid meeting one's heroes, as there's always a chance that the flesh-and-blood person might not live up to expectations. While I've never met Boyan Slat, I'd gladly take this risk.
