18th Annual Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta - http://www.leukemiacup.org/md/ SW
The Maryland Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) have set June 12, 2010 for their annual Leukemia Cup Regatta which raises funds to support research into blood related cancers. The Regatta, organized by the Eastport Yacht Club (EYC) and Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC), will take place in Annapolis, on the Chesapeake Bay.

EYC was instrumental in founding the inaugural Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta some 17 years ago. Since that time, the concept has spread to literally dozens of yachting clubs throughout the country, raising millions of dollars for research to combat blood cancers.

The racing weekend begins on Friday, June 11th with the SunTrust Bank Sailor’s Launch Party hosted at the Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC). The Launch party features special guest and world-renowned sailor and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor, Gary Jobson. Jobson will make a special presentation at the event. A cash bar, hors d’oeuvres and an exciting live and silent auction highlight the evening. The public is invited to attend this FREE event on the water at AYC. However, a $10 donation per person is requested. Auction items include framed and matted original from Doug Forsythe Gallery Canada of America’s Cup 1885, three or five day learn to sail or performance sailing course, three hour skippered boat ride on an Albin 28 powerboat or J/105 Sailboat, plus many more items.

On Saturday, June 12th the regatta will be held on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay off the shores of historic Annapolis, Maryland.

The first Annual Honorary Skipper J80 Fun Race and Launch Lunch will give sponsors, supporters and honorary patients and their families, an up-close and personal encounter with all the exciting racing action. Patients and families will take to the water on the J80’s with a Launch Lunch to be provided and viewing from EYC. After the regatta, everyone is invited to Annapolis’ best party, the United Healthcare All Hands Crew Party!, held at the Eastport Yacht Club featuring delicious food, libations, live dance music by a the Rhythm Cats, as well as the sailing and fundraising awards ceremony. The event is $30.00 per person. For more information contact Steve Reinker, Sports Events Campaign Manager at 410-891-1867 or visit www.leukemiacup.org/md for all the latest information on this year’s Leukemia Cup Regatta Series in Maryland.

Since 1993, sailors across America have been raising more than just a sail to help save the lives of children and adults with blood cancers. The Maryland Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), in concert with the Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, Maryland, pioneered the concept of competition among boats and crews to raise funds for the fight against leukemia and other blood cancers. The Annapolis event in 1993 raised $30,000, with the yacht club handling all sailing and water-related logistics, and the Maryland Chapter coordinating all land-based fund raising and event activities. Forty boats vied for the Leukemia Cup trophy, presented to the crew that raised the most funds. Enthusiasm for the event spread across the country into other markets after a presentation at LLS’s October 1993 Annual Leadership Conference by noted sailing expert and ESPN commentator Gary Jobson. Jobson serves as the national chairman of The Leukemia Cup Regatta to this day. Since its inception, Leukemia Cup Regattas throughout the country have raised over $33 million to support the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Today, both the Eastport Yacht Club and Annapolis Yacht Club support The Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta Series.
