World release of dash-mounted Apple iPad - Sanctuary Cove boat show

by Market Focus on 18 May 2010
The dash-mounted iPad arrived just last night and is due for launch at SCIBS. MIAA
In what is believed to be a world first, Outback Marine Australia Pty Ltd is releasing an Apple iPad dash panel mounting system at the 2010 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

The system, developed by OMA, transforms the iPad into an integral helm panel instrument that extends dash panel functionality to the Internet and multimedia.

Outback Marine’s director, Gary Pacey says the iPad-based system allows email and weather reports to be instantly available at the helm, without having to set up a fully fledged computer system or to leave the helm to check messages or weather updates. 'The 3G version can be set up to directly access the Internet, or the built in Wi-Fi on all versions can provide access via an on-board wireless network. While under way or at anchor, the iPad can be used as a multi media core delivering music and video,' he said.

Pacey sees the iPad as an independent navigation system to conventional marine instrumentation. "GPS applications from both Navionics and Fugawi bring the familiar charts currently available on dedicated marine instruments to the iPad and with many hours of battery capacity the iPad can remain functional and independent of a vessel’s electrical system."

The panel mounting system is available in two configurations. As an embedded mount, the iPad becomes an integrated part of the dash panel. This setup suits new boat builders - such as renowned motor yacht builder Maritimo - who incorporate Outback Marine dash and helm panel solutions on new vessels. Alternatively, a stand alone panel mount is available in either portrait or landscape orientation for retrofitting to existing dash panels.

Pacey believes his company’s new iPad-based system will have Australian and international appeal with shipments coinciding with the Australian launch of iPad.

Outback Marine offers an extensive range of helm panels for both new and existing boats. Owners of older boats can now refurbish their instrumentation and dash panels for a fresh new look with the iPad incorporated as part of the vessel’s electronics package.

Outback Marine Australia is headquartered on the Gold Coast from where it manufactures and distributes a comprehensive range of world-class marine electrical products. For more information contact Outback Marine Tel: (07) 5563 9088 or visit www.shopoma.com.au
