National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28, 2010. The National Safe Boating Council will host events across the United States to promote life jacket usage and safe boating.

According to the United States Coast Guard, in 2008 there were 4,789 recreational boating accidents that involved 709 deaths and 3,331 injuries.

Of the 709 fatal accidents, two-thirds of them drowned. Ninety-percent of those drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket.

The U.S. Coast Guard's life jacket wear-rate observational study estimates that the overall life jacket wear rate for adult boaters in 2008 was only 8.1%.

Manitou Pontoon Boats has partnered with Discover Boating and Boatsafe.com to create an online quiz that gives boaters a refresher safety course for National Safe Boating Week. The quiz consists of 25 questions testing a boater's knowledge of standard safety procedures, and can be easily be added to any website. View the quiz at http://manitouboats.com/quiz.

The online safety quiz is designed to be shared across websites by simply clicking the 'Add Quiz to Your Website' button and copying and pasting the HTML code – allowing anyone with a website to help spread awareness of boating safety. The quiz tests boaters on their knowledge of boating terminology, emergency procedures, and safety facts, rules and regulations.

Aiming to provide boaters with a base of boating safety knowledge, the quiz challenges all relevant boating standards and educates boaters on the appropriate response should an emergency occur on the water.
