Laser 4.7 World Championship 2010 Linda Tushingham

Congratulations from N Z Sail go to Ryan Amlehn from Nelson Yacht Club, South Island who is now the World Champion under 16 in Laser 4.7

On the last day of racing he won the first race by about 100 metres, and in the second race he was coming fourth through the gate and climbed back to second at the end. The Aussie boy was second in the first race and won the last race. The wind climbed to 20 knots in the last race with some very exciting sailing. His dad Lou Amlehn says 'Ryan is really happy and everybody is commenting on how well he has sailed'

Ryan finished sailing Opti competing in the European Championships in Slovenia last year and starting sailing Laser 4.7 just before Christmas. He has excelled himself with his talent and has now proved what a great sailor he is. Nelson Yacht Club started the season off with just one 4.7 Laser and now the fleet has grown there to 20 4.7 Lasers.

Ryan will no doubt have benefited by competing in the World event and gained experience from the numbers on the start line. It seems that the 4.7 class is now becoming a natural transition from Optimist as it is in Europe. N Z Sail are starting a series of coaching clinics over the winter for kids who are seriously considering sailing 4.7s next season, run by some of the top Laser sailors in the country. This is an exciting time for the 4.7 Class and its growth here in New Zealand greatly supported by N Z Sail.com and Performance Sailcraft Australia.
