Theodore Oben from UNEP and UIM President Raffaele Chiulli sign the cooperation agreement UIM
The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) have signed a cooperation agreement to further its range of environmental initiatives whilst also sharing information and know-how.

By setting up an environmental standard for powerboating and implementing the UIM Environmental Code, the collaboration reaffirms the current strategic objectives of the UIM.

UIM President Raffaele Chiulli confirmed that the world governing body for powerboating has established a UIM Environmental Award to promote best practices and encourage the development of sustainable sport, alternative energies and technologies. The UIM will also focus on conducting environmental workshops at powerboat racing events.

“This is a significant landmark in the 88-year history of the UIM,” confirms Dr. Chiulli, “As we work together on a range of environmental topics and share information and knowledge, both with UNEP and other interested sports organizations.”

“UNEP will advise the UIM in the development and implementation of its environmental plans and participate at UIM meetings. The parties will assess the possibility of strengthening ties even further in the future.”

The UIM recently established a joint accord with the motorsport world governing bodies (FIA, FIM and FAI) and will continue to be the pivotal point, ensuring maintained cooperation between the parties on environmental and alternative energy issues.
