Four Races in the 49er Worlds Gold Fleet Final, Australians in 16th and 25th place

by ISAF & Editor on 22 Jun 2002
In contrast with the controversies that had been affecting the qualifying series of the 49er World Championship, the first day of Gold Fleet racing in Hawaii has gone off without a hitch.

Teams carry their position from the qualifying series through to the Gold Fleet to count effectively as one race result. This gives far more weighting to the racing in the Gold Fleet, with positions from the qualifying series having increasingly diminished importance with the number of races completed in the finals.

The top six countries to finish after the 10 race Final Series will gain automatic berths for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Silver Medallists from the 2001 49er World Championship Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez lead the event while the British team of Alistair Richardson and Pete Greenhalgh are second with the Italian pairing Pietro Sibello and Gianfranco Sibello are third.

Early leaders Spaniards Santi Lopez-Vazquez and Javier De La Plaza are fourth with Britains
Chris Draper Chris and Simon Hiscocks fifth.

Bronze medallists at the 2001 49er World Championship Rodion Luka and George Leonchuk UKR are in sixth position.

Australia’s Chris Nicholson and Michael Blackburn have shown flashes of form but are in 16th place, which the second Australian team of Mark Turnbull and Nick Partridge now equal 25th and it will be difficult for them to gain places from here.

2001 49er World Champions American brothers Jonathon and Charlie McKee are back in 18th position.

Today will be the second last day of racing from Kaneohe Yacht Club, Hawaii for the racers at the 49er World Championship 2002
