Bailey’s strong grip on Cadet nationals

Cadet Nationals - Emily Perkes - Cadet Australian Championship SW
Tasmanian sailing siblings Alec and Samantha Bailey have victory in the International Cadet Australian sailing championships firmly in their sights with just one day and three races to sail in Adelaide.
Four wins in the past five races have given the Baileys a massive points lead after nine of the scheduled 12 races, an outstanding effort following their third overall in the International Cadet world championships in Argentina, where Alec was also the champion helmsman under 18.
Alec (17) and Samantha (12) have sailed their little dinghy, named Impulse, with great skill and determination after a mediocre first race 10th. Since then they won five of the nine races and not finished worse than fourth in the huge 81 boat fleet.
Their net score after discarding the 10th is 14 points with their nearest opposition Victorians Isabella Say and Benjamin Brill, sailing Insayne, on 40 points, the next crew, also from Sandringham Yacht Club, Anton and Julian Sasson, sailing Samaran, on 61.2 points.
Ian Lee and Alex Brzoska, sailing Snakebite from Royal Geelong Yacht Club and Adelaide Sailing Club’s Jackie Stokes and Katie Mullins, sailing Bubbles, are next, both on 62 points.
The team from Sandy Bay Sailing Club continues to sail consistently well with five crews in the top ten overall. In addition to the Baileys, Ella Connor and Hannah Chadwick, sailing Sirocco, are sixth overall and highest placed all-girl crew. Today they finished 13th in the first of two races, then second to the Baileys in the second race.
Eighth overall are Cara Swan and Caitlan Moody, sailing Hyper Hyper, followed closely on the pointscore by Eleanor Ransley and Laura Barker (Pelorus) and Georgina Kennedy and Silas Hamilton (Pour Quoi) in tenth place.
