Buchanan wins Tauranga Cup on first attempt

by Sutter Schumacher on 16 Jan 2010
Tauranga Cup winner Jayvee Buchanan won the event on his home waters in his first attempt - Davie Norris Boatbuilders 2010 Tauranga Cup Regatta Sutter Schumacher

Charteris Bay sailor Jayvee Buchanan has won the Davie Norris Boatbuilders 2010 P Class National Championship at Naval Point Club Lyttelton.

Despite racking up uncharacteristic 16th and 23rd place finishes on Saturday, Buchanan held the series lead after each day and won the 12-race contest by a handsome margin.

Runner-up Erica Dawson of Murrays Bay SC won the final race of the series, and was just eight points shy of being the first girl ever to have won both the Tanner and Tauranga Cups in the same year.

Lyttelton Harbour did not show its finest colours on the final day of racing. Southerly winds, rain showers, and an easterly swell -- combined with four days of hiking and capsizes -- took their toll on
racers, many of whom gave it everything they had but ultimately decided to return ashore before racing completed.

Not one to give in, however, and notable for his perseverance was third-place finisher Keith Inglis. The Taupo YC sailor's sail ripped in the first race of the day. He posted a second-place finish anyway before going ashore to repair the rip, missing the following race altogether. His sail repaired, he sailed back out to the course, arriving just moments before the start of the final race. He went on to finish seventh in that race, with a total score just four points behind Dawson.

But it is Buchanan's name that will now go on the Tanner Cup trophy, alongside some of the greatest names in Kiwi yachting. The 14-year-old is an accomplished sailor in the Optimist fleet, but this was his first time contesting the P Class title.

Trophies awarded in the Davie Norris Boatbuilders 2010 P Class Nationals include:
