Rapid Growth for new Sabre Sailing Association of Western Australia

A single handed dinghy new to Perth officially commenced sailing out of Perth Dinghy Sailing Club this season with 10 boats.

Previously sailed only in the Eastern States, the Sabre was designed by Victorian, Rex Fettell as a single-handed dinghy that was easy, light and simple to build in either plywood or fibre glass.

Performance suits the average sailor rather than the super athletic skipper and at an affordable price. It has the attraction of good handling performance even in lumpy seas and +20 knots, teamed with a comfortable cockpit and close class racing this is suitable for all sailors.

The Sabre is a strict one-design class supported by strong, active State Associations with sufficient flexibility to move with the times and technological development. Sail numbers are currently over 1800 with the strongest contingent sailing in Victoria.

For the keen handyman the Sabre is easily built by the simple stitch plywood and fibreglass tape method from templates and comprehensive building notes available from the association. It is estimated that most amateurs can complete a Sabre in 40 man-hours. For those who simply want to purchase a boat and get sailing, there is a For Sale list on the website. The boat is readily transported by car-topping or light trailer and is easily carried by two people.

The aim of the recently affiliated Western Australian Sabre Sailing Association is to bring interest back to sailing for the older and less agile sailor as well as the younger sailors who may leave due to difficulty in finding crew. The Sabres will be on display on Saturday afternoons at Perth Dinghy Sailing Club.

The 2009/2010 Sabre Nationals will be held at the Bellerive Yacht Club on the Derwent River in Hobart from 28 December 2009 to 3 January 2010 catering for all levels and age groups. WA has joined the rota system and plans to put on a show to be remembered for the 2012/ 2013 national titles.

A look at The Ocean Cleanup and its the 30 Cities Program The cliche goes that one should avoid meeting one's heroes, as there's always a chance that the flesh-and-blood person might not live up to expectations. While I've never met Boyan Slat, I'd gladly take this risk.
