Tommy Wharton moving to the Canadian Sports Centre Ontario

by Canadian Yachting Association Media on 6 Oct 2009

Tommy Wharton, a National Team Coach with CYA since May 2005, is to take up the role of Lead Talent Development Manager with the Canadian Sports Centre in Ontario. Tommy has provided coaching support to members of the Canadian SailingTeam (particularly the Laser and Laser Radial Olympic Classes), at many World Championships, the 2007 Pan American Games and both the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.

CST athletes and CYA staff are delighted that Tommy’s talent has been recognized at this level, and, while sorry to see him go, know that he will bring considerable skill and expertise to his new career. Ken Dool, CYA’s High Performance Director, said:'Tommy has a passion for the sport and a respect for the athletes’ dedication to success, and his efforts will be missed. We truly appreciate the time and commitment Tommy has made to our team and wish him the utmost success in his future endeavors.'

Paddy Boyd, CYA’s Executive Director, commented; 'Tommy’s appointment reflects well on sailing and the CYA and we congratulate him on this achievement.'

Tommy states 'I appreciate the opportunities I have been given at CYA including the professional guidance and support. My time as National Team Coach has been an extremely rewarding and positive experience. I would like to thank all the CYA athletes, staff, and volunteers that have made my time at the organization so worthwhile. I am looking forward to a new direction in my career and the challenges that await me. I wish all involved with the CYA the best in success in the future'
