Thursday morning dawned with the sun shining over the beautiful St. Louis Bay waters for day two of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sailing Championships.

In the women’s division, Amy Kleinschrodt (Mobile, Ala.) advanced from third to first place after notching a pair of bullets in races 4 and 5. She jumped ahead of Natalie Coleman-Fuller (W. Hartford, Conn.), who is four points back in second place. US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics member, Katy Lovell (New Orleans, La.), is in third place and six points behind Kleinschrodt.

Kleinschrodt’s husband Ken Kleinschrodt (Mobile, Ala.) duplicated his wife’s efforts by winning races 4 and 5. He was tied for first place with Andrew Eagan (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) after the fourth race but pulled out in front by one point after the fifth. Andrew Eagan remains in second. These two created distance between themselves and the pack. Third place finisher, Jackson Benvenutti (Charleston Ocean Racing Club), trails Kleinschrodt by 11 points. Zak Fanberg (New Orleans, La) and Josh Goldman (Westport, Conn.) are tied for fourth.

The wind shifted 20 degrees between the fourth and fifth races. Once the wind shifted, it remained steady. At the highest point the wind was 11 knots but dropped to 4.5 knots at the start of the fourth race.

Racing resumes Friday morning in Flying Scots on St. Louis Bay. The 2009 U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sailing Championships is hosted by the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Dry Creek Vineyard, and Sperry Top-Sider.
