Emergency VHF aerials just got better

by Des Ryan on 26 Aug 2009
Emergency VHF aerial - the newer version SW
An emergency VHF antenna is one of those spare parts on a boat that are part of every leisure boat's wardrobe, but one that every sailor hopes never to have to use.

One of the world's best known manufacturers of these essential items, Shakespeare Electronics, has just made them more user friendly.

As they are used in times of emergency, they need to be simple to spot and fast to mount.

To cater to these two requirements, the V-Tronix SL156 Shorelink Emergency Antenna comes to the rescue with its bright yellow storage tube doubling as part of the mounting system, and the 22.9 cm waterproof metal tube protects this compact VHF antenna while in storage. However, it is the recent design improvements to the SL156 make it more durable and easier to use than ever.

With the new design, boat owners simply pre-install an included mounting clip on deck. If the emergency VHF antenna is called to service, the tube slides securely into the clip, then the antenna mounts to it. Once fully assembled, this VHF antenna is 40.6 cm long.

The V-Tronix SL156 system includes 6.1 m of RG-174 mini coax cable and a pre-installed PL-259 connector for quick and secure use when timing is critical. The fact of the pre-insalled clip is that the distance from the antenna to the VHF unit is known, and the cable length is known to be suitable.
