2009 Flying Dutchman World Championships - Day One

by Ed Cox on 3 Aug 2009
2008 World Champions Hungarian Sailors Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos Mike Shields
The Flying Dutchman 2009 World Championships commenced today at Medemblik Holland, with 97 boats from 18 countries. The boats have been split into two fleets for the qualifying series on the Isjelmeer.

First thing in the morning there was heavy rain and no wind to greet the fleets, but improved during the morning. Both races were sailed in 15-20 knots with some occasional gusts into the low 20's.

As the breeze built there was short sharp chop over most of the course over a metre at times. The first race had a building breeze of 12-18 knots with part of the fleet on first hole and part on second.

The breeze was quite shifty and gradually building throughout the race. The second race had more breeze again with many boats on third hole and fully depowered.

In the two fleets Jorgen Boysen-Möller in Den 21 and 2008 World Champion Szabolcs Majthényi in Hun 70 dominated the two fleets and are tied, both on two points. Both won convincingly with large margins in the fresh breeze.

Other strong performers were the Bas van der Pol in Ned 32 Hans Peter Schwarz in Ger 87, who are in third and fourth place after the two races.

The Australians had a mixed day, but reasonable results. Edward Cox and Peter Bevis had a fifth and a tenth and are in 15th place, but still close to the top 10 only a few points behind. They would have been further up in the first race, but a problem setting the spinnaker on the final run dropped them from fourth to 12th, and they ultimately finished 10th. Alister and Andrew McCowan finished 12th and 20th and are currently 31st .

Lighter conditions are anticipated tomorrow, but less rain.
