A-Cat European title goes down to the final race

by Sail-World.com/uk on 7 Jun 2009
Bob Baier (GER) A-Cat European Champion 2009 SW
Bob Baier of Germany is the new A-Cat European Champion. Baier held off the strong last day challenge from Australian Steve Brewin to take the title by one point.

Baier went into the final day (Saturday) of the championship at the Yachtclub Rheindelta on Lake Constance, as overall leader, with Brewin down in eighth place as he still carried his black flag disqualification from race four.

In the first race of the final day, race 6, the German Baier was the winner ahead of another Australian, Andrew Landenberger, with Mitch Booth of the Netherlands in third and Brewin finishing in fourth.

With the discard kicking in after six races this lifted Brewin into second place overall, four points off the leader Baier, going into the final championship race.

With the title in the balance, Aussie Steve Brewin came home in first place in the final race, ahead of Thomas Paasch of Denmark and fellow Australian Landenberger, but Baier made it into fourth place, giving him a one point overall victory for the A-Cat European title.

Third place overall went to Sascha Wallmer of Switzerland, fourth to Britain's Chris Field, fifth to Andrew Landenberger and sixth place to Mitch Booth.
