Mooring Application for Woody Bay, Rakino Island - Have your say
by Basil Orr on 25 May 2009

Rakino Island from SE - Woody Bay is on the opposite coast of the island on the right. It is one of the most sheltered anchorages on the island SW
Auckland Regional Council (ARC) have notified a resource consent application for an existing mooring to be maintained in Woody Bay, Rakino Island. The Harbourmaster has now removed all other moorings from the bay.
You will recall that Auckland yachtsmen made submissions two years ago to prevent this lovely bay becoming a Mooring Management area with 20 moorings in it. Should this new application under the Resource Management Act be successful, it will open the door for more applications and many more moorings.

Submissions close at 4:30pm Friday 12th June 2009 – please act now.
A single mooring, whether in use or not, prevents a number of boats anchoring around it, because the shorter rode prevents the boat moving with the others, and fouls anchor lines in windshifts.
Woody Bay must be preserved as an anchorage for safety because it is the best one within the area during Easterly conditions.
Anchorage in Woody Bay is necessary to allow access to the public reserve on the southern point of the bay.
Rakino is well served with underutilised moorings in Sandy Bay, they need to implement the mooring sharing system that they have proposed.
Please email all the other yachties you know so they can enter submissions.
