47th Hamble Warming Pan – Merlin, Firefly and National 12 Classic

by Barney Smith on 17 Mar 2009
Hamble Warming Pan - Firefly SW

Hamble River Sailing Club's 2009 Warming Pan event was a huge success helped by great weather and a bumper turnout. 30 Merlins and 13 Fireflies were joined by six National 12's for the 47th running of this classic event.

The event format consists of two races each day up and down the River Hamble with occasional forays into Southampton Water. The start and finish line is from the HRSC balcony, perfectly located for the many spectators.

The largest fleet, the Merlin Rockets, had some great racing, with the added attraction of Silver Tiller billing. Andy Davis and Elle Bremer took home the Warming Pan after coming out on top of a very close three way battle with Nick Craig and James Stewart and Dan Alsop and Jennie King.

The Firefly fleet, who return to Hamble in August for their 63rd National Championship, was won by Stuart and Jane Hudson. Alex Davey and Jonquil Brookes made the long journey from the East Coast worthwhile by just pipping Steve Greaves and Sally Wilson for second overall.

Overall winner in the 12's was Jo Richards in his new 'Dead Cat Bounce. 'Jo last won the Warming Pan back in 1978!

Throughout the event the members of HRSC provided excellent race management, great catering, and fantastic entertainment in the form of an extremely competitive quiz on Saturday night.
