Innovation Award- 12volt Mould Killing 'DryBoat'

by Blackwattle Studios on 13 Aug 2008
The Delta ’T’ System Dehumidifier SW
Humidity is one of the greatest enemies on any boat, causing mould in the lockers and glitches in the electronics - especially when you leave the boat unattended for a while.

There are solutions - handy hardware-store moisture absorbers, but they only last a certain time and have to be replaced.

Then there's the large, expensive, power eating version - but a USA company has just won an innovation award for a compact unit which works on a 12 volt system, and never has to be drained.

If you can generate enough power to afford a 5.5amp output, maybe even with a timer to turn it on and off, this unit could be useful. It's called
'DryBoat' and is a product of Delta 'T' Systems.

It is one-third the size of traditional compressor/condenser type units and uses a fraction of the power, employing state-of-the-art Peltech GEOtronic Technology, with a small, solid-state heat pump.

Winner of the 2008 Innovation Award for Interior Parts given at the Marine Aftermarket Accessories Trade Show, the DryBoat reduces humidity in spaces up to 39.6 cu. m. Innovation Award judge Charles Doane, who is SAIL's editor-at-large, said, 'This device employs technology that promises to revolutionize interior climate control in boats.'

Designed for occasional or continuous use, the manufacturers say the unique system doesn't have to be emptied regularly. Instead, the water simply drains through a hose into a sink, grey-water tank or overboard. It can remove a maximum of 9.8L per week at 30° C at 80% humidity and 1.5L in typical winter conditions.

Constructed of marine-grade materials and components, the compact DryBoat measures just 21cm W x 33.9cm H x 13.5cm D and weighs 3.9kg. The unit can be used as a portable device or installed permanently. Able to fit in almost any space, it can be set directly in the galley or head sink using the optional sink stand.

Consuming 66 watts, the unit runs on 12 or 24 volt DC. An optional AC adapter is also available. It is also ignition protected.
