Is it a boat, is it a caravan? Southbeach Boats says it’s a bit each way. SW
Gold Coast boat builder, Southbeach Boats, has created a new inboard version of its popular Vacationer 240 and will unveil the new rig at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (May 22-25).
A new concept in recreational boating, the Vacationer 240 has been described as 'a boat that doubles as a caravan.' It combines the sea worthiness and performance of a small cruiser with the space and versatility of a pop-top caravan.
The company’s general manager, Ken Blacklock, said the new onboard model had been developed to meet evolving market conditions. 'It is powered by a compact, 1.7-litre, 120hp MerCruiser turbo diesel, which combines excellent economy and crisp performance,' he explained.
'We find the boat appealing to a wide cross section of boating and touring enthusiasts. 'The comparison to a pop-top caravan is quite obvious; prior to launching, electric motors raise the top to create a protective cover from bow to stern. 'Clears and side covers are then easily rolled down and snapped into place for total protection from the elements,' he added.
The Vacationer 240 has been designed to cruise at 22 knots and can hit 30 knots at wide open throttle. At cruise speed, the boat’s 150-litre fuel tank is expected to offer a range of 700 kilometres.
The Vacationer 240 is approved to carry up to 10 adults and will comfortable sleep four overnight. It boasts a well-equipped galley, with two-burner gas cook top and barbecue, a fresh water shower, a toilet/change room, a four-speaker sound system with DVD and a large swim platform.
There’s also provision aboard for either two ice boxes or a portable refrigerator. Generous storage can be found throughout the boat.
'It’s a spacious boat, with ample room for fishing and comfortable weekend camping,' Ken Blacklock added.
'We believe it will appeal to active families and retirees seeking to combine short, live-aboard holidays with the convenience of an affordable trailer boat.
'Rear steps provide easy access to the boat while it’s on its trailer, adding weight to our description that it can do duty as a caravan,' he said.
