Good News for Boaties in the North
There has been some good news on the Northland marine farming issue. The Northland Regional Council has bowed to the high number of submissions demanding that large areas of the Northland coast should be off limits to aquaculture farming.
Areas of Northland now off limits to marine farming include the whole of Whangarei Harbour, the eastern Bay of Islands, Houhora, Parengarenga and Rangaunu Harbours; inner Doubtless Bay and large parts of the Kaipara Harbour.
Yachting New Zealand along with the Northland Yachting Association and the Auckland Yacht and Boating Association have been working to ensure that this would happen and the whole coast would not be open to applications for marine farms. The issue is not yet closed and we will continue to work to protect boaties interest in the area.

YouthSail08
The cream of New Zealand’s youth sailing talent was at Algies Bay over Anzac weekend for the annual YouthSail Regatta hosted this year by Sandspit Yacht Club.
YouthSail08 was the final selection regatta to be taken into consideration for the naming of this year’s NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team to represent New Zealand at the prestigious ISAF Youth Worlds this July. This team will be announced shortly.
With such high stakes the entry list featured some top talent and the competition on the water was tough. Algies Bay provided a range of conditions, with fresh winds on the first and last days of the regatta, and light variable winds on the second and third days.
Cushla Hume-Merry of Wellington in the Laser Radial class and RS:X board sailors Josh Nixon and Jazmine Lynch from Takapuna led their classes throughout the event. The Boys 420 class was won by Paul Snow-Hansen (Wakatere) and Ben Goodwin (Napier) with a comfortable margin from Francisco Lardies (Glendowie) and David Hazard (Sandspit).
Competition was fierce in the Laser and Girls 420 classes with the winner not revealed right up until the last race. Sam Meech of Tauranga eventually held onto a 1-point lead in the Laser over Andy Maloney of Murrays Bay. In the Girls 420 Emma and Sarah Berry staged a late comeback, but were unable to overtake Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher of Murrays Bay.
Final Results…
Laser Boys: 1st Sam Meech (Tauranga); 2nd Andy Maloney (Murrays Bay); 3rd Jason Saunders (Tauranga)
Laser Radial Girls: 1st Cushla Hume-Merry (Evans Bay); 2nd Rachel Basevi (Sandspit); 3rd Sarah Tootill (Bucklands Beach)

SOF Hyeres Kiwi Results
New Zealand won silver in the Laser class and bronze in the Men’s 470 class at the ISAF Grade One French Olympic Sailing Week which wrapped up in Hyeres last weekend. Andrew Murdoch held onto second place to win silver, while Carl Evans and Peter Burling claimed a podium spot after lying 6th going into the medal race.
The final day of the regatta was light and shifty but despite this all the Olympic classes at the regatta sailed a final double-points medal race to decide the winners. New Zealand featured in the Laser, Laser Radial and Men’s 470 medal races and came away with two medals.

Auckland International 18ft skiff Regatta
Three Australian 18ft skiffs came across the Tasman for the Harken sponsored ANZAC Regatta hosted by the Auckland Sailing Club.
The winner was 2UE ActiveAir with Kinder Caring (AUS) second overall, skippered by Brett van Munster, who is the boat-builder currently manufacturing the new 18 foot Skiffs in Australia.
The regatta was sponsored by Harken, who presented some awesome prizes (digital rig-tension gauges) to the overall winner of each day’s races, plus spot-prizes to competitors throughout the contest. Their sponsorship was much appreciated and helped make the event a great success.
