If you're always looking for a new destination to dream about or even charter a yacht for your next holiday, there's a great new opportunity now in the Bahamas, as Sunsail have just opened a new base there.
It's the Abacos.
This is a delightful necklace of islands and cays which stretches about 100 nautical miles, located a little over 100 miles east of Palm Beach in Florida, and less north of Nassau. There are miles and miles of protected waters caused by the boomerang shape of the islands. These protected waters have been an alluring cruising ground for many years, but only now can you charter a yacht with Sunsail, and make
another dream come true.
But it's not only the sailing that entices. Old colonial towns are real jewels of New England architecture, and the natural world offers some rich experiences. Wander the National Park and search for distinctive birds, or take a ferry for a fun 'alternative' day.
Historically different from other areas in the Bahamas, the population of the Abacos descended from Loyalists during the War of Independence from the United States. These blonde-haired, blue-eyed Abaconians have given up wrecking and rum running, but still work at traditional occupations -- farming, fishing, and boat
building.
The five (5) inhabited cays of major importance are Walker's Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay and Elbow Cay. Outlying cays include Stranger's Cay and Umbrella Cay. Settlements on the main land extending north to south include Crown Haven in the extreme north, Fox Town, Mount Hope, Wood Cay, Cedar Harbour, Cooper's Town, Fire Road, Black Wood, Treasure Cay, Murphy Town, Dundas Town, Marsh Harbour (The Capital), Little Harbor, Cherokee Sound, Casuarina Point, Bahama Palm Shores, Crossing Rock and Sandy Point on the southern tip. Due west of Sandy Point is tiny Moore's Island.
Even among all these alternatives, there's also remains in the Abacos the ever present chance of finding a remote anchorage and relaxing with a glass of champagne and a good book.
Sunsail is also offering some very good packages to celebrate their arrival there, so go to their special offer website.
