With the Midwest finally free of the this winter’s record snowfall, Junior Sailors are getting psyched for the events they will sail this season. Detroit’s Bayview Yacht Club, the region’s recognized leader in Junior Sailing, is excited to welcome hundreds of these youngsters to the biggest event of the year on July 4th, 5th, and 6th – the fifth annual Toyota Bayview Riverfest and Junior Olympic Festival, the Midwest’s largest junior sailing event.
“We have more fun at Riverfest than at any other regatta Bayview hosts,” says Marc Hollerbach, Regatta Chairman. “Hosting the region’s future sailing stars is a tradition at BYC, and a privilege that we’re fortunate to have, now and for the foreseeable future.”
Bayview Riverfest Regatta welcomes all sailors between 8 and 18 years of age to compete on the following courses:
Laser
Laser Radial,
420
Optimist RBW
Optimist Green
No Midwestern club hosts more major national and international regattas than Bayview, and 93 years of event experience guarantees great race management on the water and well-planned shore side activities and logistics. On-the-water umpires and an International Jury will ensure fair competition on the course, while respected Race Officers like Ted Everingham, Marcia Everingham and Tim Rumptz bring decades of race management skills to deal with course setting and start-line management.
The clean, fresh water flowing from Lake St. Clair adds an important challenge to competition – currents and eddies that sailors must negotiate successfully to earn good results.
Visiting parents benefit from BYC’s location as well – 600 feet of river frontage provide the perfect backdrop to watch the racing or catch up on work using a dedicated Wi-Fi connection. Bayview’s world-renowned bar and restaurant allow ample opportunity to relax and mingle with other parents and local sailors while enjoying refreshments and top-notch cuisine. Independence Day after sunset is always a great time to be at the waterfront, with various fireworks displays lighting up the night sky from all over the area.
Organizers encourage visitors to explore the area during their stay, and will make a detailed guide to sights and attractions available on the event website. The area boasts dozens of spots that provide insight into the rich cultural, historical and artistic heritage of Detroit and its surroundings.
