Tornado Worlds- Double Gold Medallists win race 8

by Sail-World.com on 29 Feb 2008
Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher lead at the top mark - 2008 Tornado Worlds Race 8 Sail-World.com/NZ
Race 8 was started in similar postcard conditions to Race 7.

This time the double Olympic Gold Medallists, Austria’s Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher had a perfect start, at the top mark the Canadians Oskar Johansson and Kevn Stittle were again second with Puerto Rican’s Enrique Figuero and Jorge Hernandez third. The following fleet was bunched with Mitch Booth (NED) seventh, Gaebler (GER) eighth, Bundock (AUS) was buried 16th, but they were still ahead the series leader Guichard (FRA) back in 21st place.

At the bottom gate as the spinnakers came down the Canadians had hit the lead, but the Austrian pairing were attacking. Italy’s Francesco Marcolini and Edoardo Bianchi were third ahead of Booth.

At the top mark again, the Austrians were back in the lead and they led the Canadians down the run. Bundock had recovered a little to 12th. With the race only half over, he will need to pick up more placing to keep his momentum going. The series leader Guichard will throw out this result, he is 22nd.

At the top mark for the third time the Austrians still led from the Italian pair, then Booth (NED), Germany's Johannes Polgar and Florian Spalteholz were fourth ahead of the Canadians. Bundock and Ashby (AUS) were sixth.

The Austrians led the fleet to the finish taking the gun, four lengths ahead of the Italians, Polger (GER) recovered to third ahead of Booth (NED), Gaebler (GER) was sixth and Bundock seventh, a minute behind the race leader. A forgettable 25th or 26th for Guichard.
