Sailing Scholarship Applications now open at TSS

by Drew Hulton-Smith on 28 Feb 2008
Applications for sporting scholarships are invited from all high performance sailors wishing to study at The Southport School and to train and compete for TSS Sailing Club. TSSSC is a Yachting Queensland affiliated sailing club catering exclusively for junior and youth sailors, and a fully-accredited Yachting Australia Training Centre focusing on the YA GISBS Scheme of training.

TSS Sailors historically have risen to the highest levels of achievement, earning numerous Regional, State, National and World titles. International 420 World Champions Mat and Dan Belcher, Australian Youth Sailing Team International 29er skipper Nick Peate and International Contender Junior World Champion Kym Peterson have all sailed for TSSSC. As a member of the GPS (Great Public Schools) Association, the TSS Team Racing Squad competes at the annual GPS Sailing Championships, the Qld Schools Team Racing Series and the Secondary Schools Team Racing State Championships, as well as numerous local and regional regattas and championships.

TSSSC is committed to maintaining the highest standards of training with the best possible equipment and welcomes sailors of the highest caliber to their ranks.

Sailing Scholarships are available for boarders and dayboys who will be entering Years 8 to 11. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of demonstrated ability. Scholarship values vary between 10% and 75% remission of annual tuition fees for the duration of the schooling, and are determined by the Headmaster on advice from the Director of Sport. Applicants must support their Scholarship Application with two referees’ reports outlining their suitability for a Sport Scholarship at The Southport School. One referee report must by from a school coach or teacher, and the other from a recognised club or regional, state, national or international coach in the applicant’s chosen sport. The scholarship selection process is competitive and not all applicants who meet the basic eligibility criteria are necessarily awarded scholarships. Many boys on Sports Scholarships are performing at State or National selection level. The Headmaster may take a families' ability to afford the fees into account and parents in this situation should flag this on their application. In such cases family income information may be required to be conveyed confidentially to the Headmaster. For application forms please email Admissions on admissions@tss.qld.edu.au.

Deadline for applications is 28 March, 2008.
