NSW Maritime issues a reminder following the capsizing of a recreational vessel this morning at the entrance to Port Stephens.
High seas are causing dangerous boating conditions at coastal bar crossings along much of the NSW north coast.
NSW Maritime is asking boat skippers to be responsible and to keep clear of bar crossings exposed to high seas.
The area of concern stretches from Tweed Heads to Newcastle.
Skippers should also be alert to dangerous offshore conditions elsewhere along the coast.
A bar crossing that may seem OKin the morning can alter its character in a matter of hours and become dangerous for a return.
NSW Maritime says if you're the skipper, you're responsible ... so check the weather.
The incident at Port Stephens this morning occurred when a large wave swamped a recreational powerboat with three adults and a child on board. All were thrown into the water.
The crew of a nearby vessel was able to recover all four people and transfer them safely to shore. The vessel was being recovered.
NSW Maritime says a number of infringements have been issued for people not wearing lifejackets when crossing bars over recent days. It is mandatory for all people on board a recreational vessel to wear a lifejacket for the crossing, regardless of the conditions.
