Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta - Day Two Chicago Yacht Club http://www.chicagoyachtclub.org
Day two of the Timmes rounds out with Vermont maintaining top position. Courses were Windward leeward 6 legs for most of the day and winds 10-15 knots out of the Southwest. Competition has been tight between Vermont, 36 points overall and Wisconsin, 38 points overall, with only a two point margin between them. URI holds the third place spot at 75 points.

'We always have fun for sailing the Timmes,' commented Will Strehlow, an Evanston native and junior at University of Vermont. 'It's such a unique event in college sailing we would never want to pass up the opportunity.' Vermont is currently ranked 20th in Sailing World's college rankings.

Racing continues Sunday followed by the awards ceremony.

The regatta was named for the late Timme Angsten. Born in Oak Park, Ill., in 1927, he became interested in dinghy sailing while in high school. Later, he raced Stars, and in 1943, won the Great Lakes Championship in his first season as owner of his Star, Skylark. Timme remained active in Stars, competing against such top sailors as Olympic winners Bert Williams and Harry Nye, as well as Dick Stearns and Gary Comer.

Timme graduated from Oak Park High School in 1945 and entered Northwestern University where he organized the first sailing club. He had also been racing as a member of the Chicago Yacht Club Dinghy Fleet. Timme arranged an invitational collegiate regatta to be held at his home club over Thanksgiving weekend. Northwestern won that first event in 1947, and the regatta has been an annual tradition since then.

Within a year of the first race, Timme tragically died of a childhood head injury, but the regatta has carried on with the support of the Chicago Yacht Club and the Angsten family. Timme's father, the late Commodore Henry Angsten, donated the perpetual trophy and the Angsten family continues to help defray regatta costs each year.
