The RS600 and RS Vareo classes enjoyed a sunny weekend at the Broadstars SC for their Fat Face Racing Circuit open meetings. The weekends racing opened with a light force 2 that slowly built to finish with a 20-knot breeze that stretched everyone.

John Charles won the RS600 event with Ian Marshall in second and David Annan third. In the Vareo event Andy Temple was the winner ahead of Tim Seward with Nigel Tinkler third.

RS600 Open

The first race stared with a force 2 wind against tide so there was some waves to play with on sections of the course with David Annan taking the early lead but lost it to Ian Marshall who came 1st with a speedy John Charles in 2nd and David Annan in 3rd .

In the second race, John Charles rounded the windward mark first followed by the rest of the fleet. After the reach the fleet had spread out after three laps the course was shorted and John sailed for the line and gaining his first 600 race win followed by James Sainsbury and the Ian Marshall.

The third race saw a late comer Olly Straker lead the race from the start and carry it all the way through to the finish followed by Ian Marshall then John .

Night came and the drink and games were flowing with the 600s against the Vareos.

Morning broke the next day with a few sore heads, with the wind gaining in strength to give a promising force 4 to 5 for the start of Race 4. After a short delay due to the wind shifting around Olly, Ian and David started at the front. Shortly after the start Olly’s halyard snapped which was the end of his weekend, giving Ian the led on the second lap. At the end of the race Ian won with John 2nd And David 3rd

Race 5 saw the wind gaining in strength more and more Ian lead the race but got confused and started to do another lap which let John win and David in second and Ian after turning around came in third.

Overall the order was John Charles with Ian Marshall in second and David Annan third.

RS Vareo Open

The Vareo fleet were so keen to get underway they forced a general recall in the first race, before Andy Temple led from the start, with Adrian Thear finishing second and Nigel Tinkler third.

With the breeze building for Race 2 Andy led off the line. On the first downwind leg the fleet split to both sides of the course with the land side of the course favoured until a massive wind shift, gave the advantage to the boats on the outside - Andy, Nigel and Matt Moore, but Matt capsized on the next lap and fell back into the chasing pack. Leaving Andy to win with Nigel second and Jim Hood third.

Race 3 saw an exciting 15 knots with small waves appearing (perfect Vareo weather). Andy again led the fleet off the start followed closely by Tim Seward and Anthony Payne, the three Broadstairs boats then pulled away from the pack finishing 1, 2 and 3.

Sunday morning saw a 15 knot breeze but building by the next race. Andy lead the way in race 4 until breakages caused his retirement with Tim taking the lead to the finish with a close battle behind with Anthony, Ceri Thomas and Jim.

By race 5 the breeze had built to 20knots with gusts in excess. Andy capsized twice on the first lap but still keept the lead with part of the fleet deciding not to fly kites downwind. With Andy and Nigel pushing each other, Ceri was in 3rd until on the last lap when Tim challenged with Ceri only just managing to hold third place and capsizing on the finishing line.

Race 6 was not sailed due wind and tide combination.
