U.S. Men's and Women's Sailing Championships

by Cynthia Goss on 13 Sep 2007
US SAILING’s U.S. Men's Sailing Championship for the Clifford D. Mallory Cup and U.S. Women's Sailing Championship for the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Cup will be held concurrently in San Diego (Calif.) this week. Both events will be hosted by Southwestern Yacht Club, from September 11–15.

Competitors from throughout the United States will be racing in Etchells, and both events are sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., a sponsor of all US SAILING’s Adult National Championships, and Dry Creek Vineyard.

In the competition for the Mallory Cup, defending champion Scott Young (Austin, Texas), the only five-time winner in the event's history, will return for another run at this prestigious national title. Young, the current title holder, won this championship three times as a skipper and twice as crew. Also vying for the Mallory Cup will be Charles Quigley (Winthrop, Mass.), who placed third last year and won the event in 2002.

Contenders skippering for the Adams Cup include Natalie Coleman-Fuller (Chatham, Mass.), who will be eager to return to the starting line for another run at this title, her fifth U.S. Women's Sailing Championship. Also included in the fleet will be skipper Alana O’Reilly (Charleston, S.C.), 2006 Female College Sailor of the Year and two-time All-American, who will be sailing in the championship for the first time.

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sailing Championships are ladder events, meaning that competitors have qualified for each championship by winning a series of qualifying events at local and regional levels before getting to the National Championship level, or they have applied by resume.

More information, daily reports, race results, and photos will be posted at each championship's website during the racing.
