Jersey Telecom Regatta - Day 2
by William Harris on 9 Sep 2007
Competitors in the 9th Jersey Telecom Regatta spent another day in the sun but paid for it with light variable winds. Starting at 10am, the race officers set the windward mark to the north of their proposed courses only to find the wind veering through 180 degrees once racing had started.
Nor was this constant. The southerly land breeze that set in proved to be just as fickle and it was not until the early afternoon that the wind settled firmly in the north to provide good racing conditions in St Aubin's Bay.
In the Quarter Ton class, Darren Marston's Catch had another successful day to lead the field with seven and a half points after three races, ahead of Howard Sellers' Bullet on 9 with Chris Frosrt and Kevin George's Tom Bombardil on 12. Peter Morton's Espada also finished the day on 12 points.
Catch, Bullet and Tom Bombardil each took a fist place. Eighteen boats raced in the class. The best Jersey boat, on the day, was Peter Crabb's Jackflash in seventh place with 28 ppoints.
First honours of the day in the IRC Class 1 cruiser class went to the Perkins partnership's Archambault 35, Abracadabra, with the Bedell Group Racing Team's Jackana winner in the second race of the day.
Steve Pearl's newly-acquired X79, Less Xpense won 2 races in IRC Class 2 whilst Vince Smith's Shasa took the third. Andy Pitter's Sigma 33, Warrrior won the first race in Class 3 whilst Mark Tcker's Wetserly Merlin, Lisia, won the second.
Sunday sees another full day of racing in all classes with the prizegiving bringing a very successful event to a close.
