Engstrom and Langenius are RS Feva Champions

by RS media on 7 Aug 2007
RS Feva European Championship 2007 RS Feva

The final day of the RS Feva Europeans dawned with millpond conditions, but a three hour postponement saw a decent southerly breeze kick in. The fleet launched at 14:00 shortly before low water and again it took three starts to get the fleet away.

The Swedish girls, Sofia Engstrom and Frida Langenius, got their bullet to put themselves comfortably in the lead overall with Edoardo Marini and Stefano Balestrero (ITA) second and Matthew O'Dowd and Jack Burke (IRL) third.

The second race was delayed as a large container ship heading up river to the Port of Waterford chose not to avoid the fleet and took its traditional mid-channel route where much of the fleet was assembled. No boats came close to the ship but its presence seriously disrupted the course.

The fleet got away safely on its first start and Simona Binelli and Matilde Pitante (ITA) recorded their first bullet of the competition with Alex Poyner and Holly Tucker (GBR) in second place. Third place was Scott Flannigan and Jamie Carton (IRL). The Swedish girls beat their rivals by one place cementing their lead overall.

The third race got away to a smooth start and for the second time in the series an Irish crew was triumphant. Matthew O’Dowd and Jack Burke from the RStGYC tied down fourth place overall with this excellent result. Guy Stephens and Rory Spriggs finished second but could do nothing to stop the Swedes, Sofia Engstrom & Frida Langenius, becoming RS Feva European Champions of 2007.

Overall this event was the largest ever hosted by Waterford Harbour Sailing Club and was deemed by all those participating to be an outstanding success.

The large number of overseas visitors enjoyed an energetic sailing and social programme which included golf, trips to Waterford Crystal and the famous hospitality of one of Ireland’s most renowned tourist locations. The Club intends building on the experience of hosting this event to bid for future appropriate sailing championships at national and European level.

We should not forget the Juniors. Hugo Jones-Warner/Hugo Tucker finishing in 27th and are now the RS Feva Junior Europeans Champions. With Will Lowes/Kate Sanders 2nd and Tom Adams/Joel Bell 3rd.
