The crews have arrived from around the world, for the third annual Mayor’s Cup presented by St. Mary Medical Center, which starts here Thursday July 19.

Eight all-women teams – from Australia, France, Brazil and the United States – enjoyed 15 knots of breeze today during practice for the Grade Two International Sailing Federation event. The competition takes place aboard a fleet of Catalina 37 sailboats, which are identical in gear and design.

'It’s great to know the boats are even and it is up to us to just sail better,' said returning skipper Charlie Arms, of San Diego, Calif.

'Match racing is not about who has the most money to buy the best boat and equipment,' added Sydney, Australia’s Katie Spithill, who came in second in the 2006 event. 'It is instead about skill and the way a team handles an identical boat, versus their opponent.'

Eight teams, of seven women each, will square off two-at-a-time, in three days of races commencing Thursday July 19 at 11:30 am. The competition can be viewed from the Belmont Pier and will continue through Saturday July 21; culminating with a prize-giving at Gladstone’s that night.
