Miami’s Ernesto Rodriguez, fresh off a close contest with Augie Diaz for the Snipe North American Championship title where he finished second, won the Laser Atlantic Coast Championship. Now an apprentice master, Ernesto was formerly a Laser sailor on the Cuban Olympic Sailing Team. Raul Aguyo from Santo Domingo finished three points behind him. Fred Strammer was third in the 23-boat regatta that was hosted by Martin County’s US Sailing Center.
Colin Smith dominated the 47-boat Laser Radial fleet and won the regatta with 29 points. Another junior Laser sailor, Phillip Alley was second, finishing 11 points behind Smith. Two members of the US Olympic Team, Sarah Lihan and Genoa Griffin, tied for third with 42 points. Fourth place went to Laser Radial, Snipe and Sunfish sailor and one of the most upbeat people whom you will ever meet, James Liebl.
Edgar Diminich was low point for the regatta. He took six bullets in the nine-race 2.7 regatta. His next closest competitor was Cam Hall with 36 points. Alec Anderson and Marissa Lihan, another of the legendary sailing Lihan family, tied for third with 38 points.
